Southern League Eastern Division
Chatham Town 3-3 Banbury United
The report in the following week's programme is a bit too long to type up. The basic facts are that Banbury took the lead three times but couldn't hold on after George Redknap had put them 3-2 ahead in the 80th minute. Banbury hit the bar twice, Terry Muckelberg with a thumping header in the first minute and, two minutes after half-time when leading 2-1, Matty Gooderick – somehow – from not two yards out; Ady Fuller's follow-up was equally improbably cleared off the line. Chatham had their player-manager Steve Hearn sent off in the 88th minute but still had time to equalise.
This point made Banbury safe in the Eastern Division after a nervous few weeks, relieved greatly the previous Saturday by Steve Jenkins' hat-trick against Wisbech. The last line of the report: "This was a good performance by United, and the 80 travelling fans made it sound like a home game."
Goals:-
Banbury – Redknap 19, 80; McKay 35
Chatham – 23 (pen), 76, 89
Attendance: 224
Banbury returned to Chatham early in the following season (21st Sep) and won 4-3. They had gone behind early on but took a 4-1 second-half lead that should have been greater before almost allowing Chatham back in by conceding two late goals. The game was notable for a rare Kieran Sullivan goal, his first more than 13 years and scored from the same spot as Gooderick's unlikely miss five months earlier.
There was another good turnout from Banbury and even if it wasn't quite as lively as earlier in the year, this was another memorable away day.
Goals:-
Banbury – Sylla 33; Stanbridge 53, 75; Sullivan 63
Chatham – 8, 81, 90
Attendance: 191
Footnote:
Chatham remained in the Eastern division after the 2004 reforms but were transferred in 2006 to the Isthmian, from which they were relegated to the Southern Counties East (AKA the Kent League) in 2017. They returned from that last year as runners-up and last weekend won the Isthmian Div 1SE, more than 2,300 spectators cramming into their Maidstone Road ground to see them beat Cray Valley.
