1988
The last time Banbury won in Potato Land. It was their 11th visit (they had won there four times in the 70s) but the first in eight seasons. Lynn had returned to the SL in 1983 after three years in the NPL, were Premier Division runners-up to Cheltenham in 1985 but were relegated in 1987.
Winning wasn't so surprising, although a few eyebrows might be raised at the attendance of just 215, not untypical at that time for Lynn who were at quite a low point. Under Phil Lines management, Banbury had improved greatly during the season and this was a convincing victory. Well, at least according to the report. I was there and, TBH, I don't remember a great deal about the game. The small group of Banbury supporters, maybe 20 and including Shadders and Mark Allitt, were more concerned with avoiding a knife-wielding teenager. Perhaps it's something in the soil...
Anyway, here's the (brief) match report:
Philip Houghton scored his third penalty in three games as Banbury notched up a fine win at King's Lynn. The Norfolk side were lying four places above in-form Banbury United before the game but were outclassed from the moment that Houghton's penalty beat Andy Claxton, the King's Lynn keeper, after a needless handball. The pace of Tom Pearson and Bob Pratley's commitment in midfield turned the game and Houghton’s penalty was just reward for their work.
The home side then held out until half time but Banbury increased their lead soon after the re-start. Terry Muckelberg made a run down the right wing and turned a cross into the area, deceiving Claxton in the King's Lynn goal and curling the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net. Banbury were firmly in the driving seat after the second goal and put the game beyond doubt with a third goal on 58 minutes. Pearson weaved his way through the home defence and coolly lobbed the ball over the keeper.
Banbury: Keith Baker, Cliff Cousins, Dean Hill, Phil Houghton, Ian Bowyer, Kieran Sullivan, Tom Pearson, Dave Woodland, Darren Hill, Terry Muckelberg, Bob Pratley. Sub: Phil Lines (on for Pratley).
Two more that are recent enough for most of you to remember.
