Bashley 0-1 Banbury United
Southern League Eastern Division
Attendance: 177
February but it could have been April, such was the weather on that beautiful day in the New Forest. The win was Banbury's third of five in eight games that allowed us all to breathe more easily after a difficult first five months back in the SL. Supporters made it a family day out and outnumbered the home fans.
Here's Barry W's match report.
If only Banbury could reproduce their away form at home [see below], the 13th place that they hold after this impressive result would be improved on by quite a few places
Against a very big and physical Bashley side, Banbury competed favourably in the opening encounters and both sides defended well. Honours were even for most of the first half with Banbury's defence outstanding to a man as the home side pushed forward at every opportunity. Bashley's best chance was a Craig Davis shot on the half-hour which hit the outside of the post. At the other end, Garry Harrison went close with a shot that was deflected into the side-netting.
Banbury took the lead in the 43rd minute when Matty Gooderick, who was a yard faster than any of the Bashley players, took the ball up the left and slid a perfectly weighted pass out to Jody McKay on the touchline. He took the ball forward, beat his marker and swung over a fantastic cross for Harrison who crashed his header past a bemused 'keeper Geoff Sim from the edge of the six-yard box.
In the second half, Bashley's players were even more cynical than in the first and physio Wally Hastie seemed to be permanently on call. The home side's Simon Eley, who received a yellow card early in the first half for a crude challenge on Les Phillips, deserves a special mention for the most undisciplined display that I have witnessed in the league this season. He spent the greater part of the second half threatening and verbally abusing the Banbury supporters at every opportunity and it was amazing that he stayed on the pitch for the whole game.
Banbury could have increased their lead in the 77th minute when a cross from the left found Gooderick on the right in acres of space. He had enough time to steady the ball and his shot easily beat Sim, but a splendid goal-line header by Davis saved the day for the home side.
The general indiscipline of the Bashley team played into Banbury's hands, and United continued to play and work hard. Simon Tricker was in good form and he made an excellent save in the final minutes to deny Bashley. A deflected shot looked all the way a goal but he somehow managed to leap backwards and tip the ball over the crossbar.
In the 9th minute of injury time the magnificent Terry Muckelberg was sent off for a second bookable offence, which was ironic given that the extra time was played for time lost while Banbury players were being treated for injuries resulting from Bashley's crude tactics.
