Banbury United 2-1 Corby Town (att. 490)
Southern League First Division North
Two late goals from Tony Foster saw Banbury come from behind to win and send their supporters home for Christmas in a much better mood than they had been seven days earlier after a disappointing draw at Gloucester extended their poor run of form to just two wins in ten matches. United had won at Stourbridge during the week, the successive victories giving their flagging promotion hopes a boost.
For more than 75 minutes of this game it looked as though Banbury's erratic form would continue but an equaliser from the penalty spot gave them hope and they found the urgency to get the victory, Foster scoring the headed winner with five minutes to go. It was their first league win on a Saturday since the beginning of September, 16 weeks earlier. FA Cup and Trophy distractions accounted for some of the loss of form – United had begun the season with six wins and a draw, with the new partnership of Foster and Tony Jacques promising great things.
It wasn't to be. The win was their last for seven weeks. Eight consecutive defeats followed, at that time the second worse run in the club's history, starting three days later with the Boxing Day fixture at Atherstone. Level at 1-1 until the hour mark, United conceded five times in 20 minutes, four goals coming in a grim 10 minute spell that saw most of the travelling Town Enders disappear into the bar.
Atherstone went on to win promotion as runners-up to Grantham. Banbury finished 12th.
