In 1979-80, Altrincham were the first champions of the Alliance Premier League. They were the only applicants for election to the Football League and unluckily missed out by two votes. They were sure of the votes of Grimsby and Luton but apparently the Grimsby representative 'forgot' to vote and the Luton rep arrived from 'lunch' after the vote had taken place...
In 1974-75, Altrincham drew at Everton in the FA Cup 3rd round and repeated the feat at Spurs in 78-79. In 80-81 they lost at Liverpool in the same round. Four of these five games drew in excess of 30,000 spectators.
Elsewhere in 79-80, Brackley were finishing 5th of 16 clubs in the Hellenic League First Division in only their third season of senior football.
Today's result from Conference North: Alty 1-4 Brackley, att. 716.
