King's Lynn's promotion from the United Counties isn't as certain as it once seemed. They've been overtaken at the top by Long Buckby. The clubs met recently at LB: result 2-1, attendance 784 (typical attendance 40-60) – and some argy-bargy off the pitch ("No!", they cried, "Surely not?!"). Subsequent away wins by LB of 11-1 and 7-1 have seen them improve their GD by so much that they only need a point at home to Blackstones this weekend to secure the title – and given that Blackstones were their 11-1 victims last week, you wouldn't bet against it. KL are just up the road from me at Cogenhoe – I might not be able to get to Cirencester but I think I'll give this one a miss.
LB have not got their ground grading and won't be promoted. If KL are one of a number of clubs competing to go up from second place they should be OK because their points total already looks good enough to make them the best runners-up on PPG. Their problem is that there could well be 12 champion clubs promoted. Seven clubs – Guildford City, Wroxham, Witham Town, Herne Bay, Gresley, Royston Town and Winchester City – have won their leagues and have their gradings, as do Merthyr who need to win one of their two remaining games to win the Western League (their game at Wells last night was abandoned during a downpour). In each of the NW Counties and Northern Counties East the current top two cannot be caught – only the title remains to be decided and all four clubs have their grading. Three Bridges ought to win the Sussex League. That's 11, leaving just the Northern League where, admittedly, Dunston will have to go some to win the title, and the Hellenic, where Shortwood are runners-up with an inferior PPG.
It might not be settled this weekend – it could take until Monday and Tuesday respectively to settle the Northern and Western leagues.
