What's the story with South Shields? Step 7 club, but the players are full time professionals. Excellent facilities. How are they funding it ? I've only just noticed this (!). SSFC have been funded by the chairman, self-made millionaire Geoff Thompson, who bought the club in 2015: southshieldsfc.co.uk/club-officials/geoff-thompson/I used some of this 2017 article in a filler piece for the Banbury programme in 2018 when Shadders was editor: www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/south-shields-club-steeped-history-12613376Their average attendances have risen from under 100 in the Northern League Div 2 (equivalent level to Hellenic Div 1) to around 2,000 today. They lost to Warrington Town in the 2019 play-offs, would probably have won promotion as of right in 2020 but for the pandemic – they were 12 points clear with nine games to go when the plug was pulled – and lost again to Warrington in last season's play-offs. In both of those play-off seasons they finished 2nd by just three points. The new £3 million, 900-seat stand was opened this summer. The ground is actually in Jarrow, 2½ miles from the home of the first South Shields FC in the town proper.

South Shields FC up for sale. "I'd love to continue the journey with you but as many of you will know, I was diagnosed with cancer last year. Although my recovery is going well and, hopefully, the worst is over, I need to put my health ahead of my various business interests. For that reason I have decided to sell my interest in the club."www.southshieldsfc.co.uk/post/a-statement-from-geoff-thompson
