Hellenic League Premier Division
Wantage Town 1-3 Banbury United
With this victory, Banbury won the Hellenic League championship and promotion back to the Southern League from which they had been relegated ten years earlier.
Thanks to a Matty Gooderick goal United led 1-0 at half-time, comfortably but without dominating. When Wantage equalised with less than ten minutes to go it looked like Banbury might have to wait until the weekend to confirm the title but they were quickly back in the lead when Gooderick was fouled and Steve Jenkins scored from the penalty spot.
United fans (virtually all of the official 158 attendance) were already celebrating when, in the last minute, Jody McKay crowned the win with a special goal. Jenkins found himself free on the right side of the penalty area, close to the bye line. He chipped the ball back beyond the penalty spot to the incoming McKay, who didn't have to break his stride in volleying into the top corner.
And it was a damn sight warmer then than it is today!

What a goal it was from Jody, a true Banbury legend. It was a magical night, one I will never forget.

The reality of the Southern League brought us down to earth. First match a single-goal defeat on a baking afternoon in the vast bowl of Sittingbourne's Central Park in the middle of an industrial estate, and just three points from the first nine games.

....on a baking afternoon in the vast bowl of Sittingbourne's Central Park in the middle of an industrial estate, still to this day quite possibly the worst away ground I've ever visited. an absolutely humongous empty stand and a greyhound track that meant you may as well have been watching from outside of the ground. on the topic of wantage, i seem to remember a certain commercial director doing a lap of the opposition area when that Jody strike went in

....on a baking afternoon in the vast bowl of Sittingbourne's Central Park in the middle of an industrial estate, ...still to this day quite possibly the worst away ground I've ever visited... Their 'new' premises (Bourne Park) in the car park around the back was bad for the opposite reason – crammed into a corner almost as an afterthought, a scruffy affair with temporary buildings and unfinished standing areas. I presume it's now derelict because the club has moved again, to the home of now defunct Kent League side Woodstock Sports, two miles from the town centre. Their average attendance there is about 120.
The story of the sale of their town centre ground, the construction of Central Park and all that followed is a lesson to everyone in football in how ambition can lead to folly.

Memories ain't what they used to be. We've been describing Jody's goal wrongly for 20 years – Gooderick provided the cross.
How do I know this? A video clip has surfaced. It's too big to load on here as an attachment so if you want to see it, PM me with your e-mail address.

Adam Varney is responsible, he’s come across lots of old videos, including the pitch invasion at wantage, and a few home games! one video you can be seen Steve checking out the new stand, also an interview with Paul Saunders. I believe the media team will be putting the footage up soon

The broadcast was made by Oxford 6 TV: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_TVWho has the original film from which they got their little piece? Who remembers seeing someone with a video camera that evening?
